The March to a Zero Waste Lifestyle, Part I: Metal

Submitted by Don Hamp, EAC Member.

Most curbside recyclers do not accept metal beyond aluminum and steel food containers, but you can drop off almost anything that is >50% metal at your local metal recycler. There are several local businesses that provide this service.
Take the leap! Set aside a bucket for smaller items (bolts, nails, hinges etc.) and warehouse larger metal pieces (old ladders, basketball stands, garden fencing, bed frames - You name it!) until you're ready to make a run.
Don't worry if the recycler refuses it. There will be a regular waste dumpster close by. Contaminated items are a no-no (e.g. metal gas cans must be thoroughly cleaned and dried).
Read Earth911 recycling guide for metal (https://earth911.com/recycling-guide/how-to-recycle-metal/) to learn more and take another big step toward a zero waste lifestyle.
