Montgomery Township is seeking a strategic, forward-thinking Fire Chief to lead a combination fire department providing fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency management, EMS coordination, and fire marshal services.
This is a rare opportunity for an experienced executive to oversee a dynamic, multi-disciplinary fire services organization while working closely with Township leadership, regional partners, and a dedicated mix of paid and volunteer firefighters.
Executive Summary of the Role
Reporting directly to the Township Manager, the Fire Chief is responsible for the overall leadership, administration, and operational readiness of all Fire Services. The position blends high-level strategic leadership with hands-on command responsibility, ensuring the protection of life and property through effective emergency response, prevention programs, training, and interagency coordination.
The Fire Chief provides unified direction across career and volunteer personnel, fostering collaboration, professionalism, accountability, and mutual respect. The role requires balancing operational demands with fiscal stewardship, personnel development, regulatory compliance, and long-term planning.
Key Leadership Responsibilities
- Provide executive leadership for all fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency management, EMS coordination, and fire marshal functions.
- Direct and integrate operations across a combination (paid and volunteer) fire department, ensuring consistency, equity, and operational excellence.
- Develop and implement departmental policies, strategic plans, and performance objectives aligned with Township goals.
- Serve as Emergency Management Coordinator, overseeing preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery efforts.
- Lead budgeting, capital planning, and resource management to ensure efficient and compliant operations.
- Build strong working relationships with elected officials, Township administration, regional public safety partners, and community stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, standards, and best practices.
- Oversee personnel selection, training, supervision, discipline, and professional development for both career and volunteer members.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will be a respected fire service professional with demonstrated experience leading or serving in a combination fire department, bringing a collaborative leadership style that values both paid and volunteer service models. They will possess strong command presence, sound judgment under pressure, and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences; from firefighters and volunteers to elected officials and the public.
Experience in emergency management, interagency coordination, fiscal oversight, and organizational leadership is essential, along with the ability to balance operational readiness with long-term strategic vision.
