The Fire Department Would Like to Remind You to Stand By Your Pan!

grease fireHow often has the doorbell rung or a child interrupted you while you were cooking, causing you to forget what is left sizzling on the stove - until smoke filled the house? Stand by your pan!

Cooking is the leading cause of home fires according to the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). One in three home fires started in the kitchen, and more than 150,000 fires a year are related to cooking. There is no safe period of time for the cook to step away from a hot stove.

If a small fire starts in a pan on the stove, put on an oven mitt and slide a lid over the pan to smother the flames. Turn off the burner and do not remove the lid until it is completely cool. Never pour water on a grease fire and never discharge a fire extinguisher onto a pan fire, as it can spray or shoot burning grease around the kitchen spreading the fire.

If there is an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed to prevent flames from burning you and your clothing.

If there is a microwave fire, keep the door closed and unplug the microwave. Call the fire department and make sure to have the oven serviced before you use it again.

A cooking fire can quickly turn deadly. There have been too many homes destroyed and people killed or injured by fires that could have been easily avoided. Please heed these simple safety rules. Firefighters would like to be in your kitchen, but only when invited for dinner!

Help Us Help You in an Emergency: Have Your House Number Visible!

Have Your Address VisibleCritical time is lost in an emergency when your house does not have a visible number on the mailbox or the house. The number needs to be in plain site without any obstructions. The Fire Department, Police Department, and EMS want to find your house quickly. If emergency personnel are faced with the challenge of responding to a location with no visible house number, it could cause a delay in service. Responders' duty is to save lives, and for them every second counts.

Montgomery Township's Code requires that "street numbers shall be so located and maintained so as to be conspicuous and readily observable from the street... [and] that the street numbers at all times are not obstructed from plain view from the street."

Help us help you - keep your address visible!

May is Bike to Work Month - Be Safe While Riding Your Bicycle

Bike to Work Old SchoolMay is Bike to Work Month. Here are a couple of reminders as the weather warms up and bicycles are dusted off.

Wearing a bicycle helmet can prevent serious injury. Be sure that you wear one every time that you ride your bike. Your helmet, when it is adjusted, should cover your forehead. The chin strap should be tight enough to keep the helmet from slipping. You should be able to slip only 2 fingers under your chin strap.

Remember that your bicycle is a vehicle and you need to see and be seen by other vehicles. Use a bicycle safety flag. This is especially important for children whose bikes are smaller and more difficult to see. At night, use a headlight and a small battery powered leg light to help everyone see you. During the day wear a light colored helmet and bright or fluorescent clothing.

Traffic rules, signs and signals. Ride on the right side of the road with traffic, never against it. Don't pass a car on its right side. Wait behind them . Ride in single file and do not weave in and out of traffic. To avoid being hit by the opening of a door of a parked car, ride approximately 3 feet away from them. Be sure to signal before making a turn and "shoulder check" for traffic before making that signal.

Be Safe and Enjoy Your Ride!

Montgomery Township Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4) and Stormwater Management

US Clean Water ActThe goals of all MS4s programs and Montgomery Township are to reduce the discharge of pollutants from the township, to protect water quality and to satisfy requirements of the Clean Water Act. Montgomery Township would like you to remember that the water and any items that go into a storm sewer go directly into streams. This water is not cleaned in any way and does not go to the waste water treatment plant. Montgomery Township needs all of its residents to assist us in keeping our storm water and storm water sewer system clean by doing the following: dispose of water properly, clean up and dispose of pet waste properly, use fertilizers according to manufacturer's guidelines to prevent excess runoff and store materials that could pollute storm water indoors. Also, please monitor storm water inlets near your property. No one should dump anything into the storm sewer system. If you see someone dumping please call the township at 215-393-6900.
