Anonymous Tip Line

NOTICE: The Anonymous Tip Line is not a monitored phone line or email account and should not be used for instances requiring immediate police assistance. Dial 911 in the event of an emergency or to speak with an officer immediately.

The Montgomery Township Police Department provides an anonymous tip line as an alternative means by which individuals can relay valuable information in an anonymous manner. The Department's goal in providing this service is to obtain information on criminal activity that is unattainable through conventional methods and to assist the department in investigating criminal activity that might otherwise go unreported.

This anonymous tip line has been created to receive information from those individuals who are reluctant to become involved in reporting criminal activity but realize that an injustice has occurred. Callers are encouraged to leave their names and phone numbers but may choose to leave information anonymously. Whenever someone contacts the Montgomery Township Police Department with information concerning criminal activity, we attempt to protect their identity to the extent that the law allows.

Telephone calls and emails are received electronically. Department personnel check the answering machine and emails periodically and distribute the information received according to established procedures. In some instances criminal investigations may be initiated from this information.

As with any police department telephone line and email, there are criminal penalties for reporting false information or using the phone/computer in a harassing manner. Effective security and the protection of people and property is everybody's responsibility. Take the first step in helping us make our community safer by utilizing the anonymous tip line when you have personal knowledge of criminal activity.

Introduction:

Thank you for taking time to let us know your thoughts about the Montgomery Township Police Department and the service we provide to our community. Community policing depends on a working partnership between the police and the citizens we serve.

A citizen commendation or complaint causes the department to examine the services that we provide to our community and to make improvements, if necessary, in the way we provide those services. We are committed to improving our service to the community and appreciate any input from its citizens.

J. Scott Bendig
Chief of Police

History

On July 5, 1938, the elected township officials enacted local legislation providing for the formation of the Montgomery Township Police Department. The Department began as a part time law enforcement agency, operating out of a home on Bethlehem Pike. In 1953, the Department became a full-time law enforcement agency, continuing to grow proportional with the development of the Township throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s.

On December 11, 1976, tragedy struck the Montgomery Township Police Department when Officer David T. Hancock was killed in the line of duty while investigating a burglar alarm at the JC Penney Tire Center at the newly constructed Montgomery Mall. This tragedy had long lasting effects on the Township and Police Department. Since that fateful day the Department has continued to grow, evolving into the diversified and professional organization that it is today.

Currently, the Department’s jurisdiction consist of 10.7 square miles. The Township has grown to an estimated population of 24,790 residents with 9,467 households according to the 2010 Census data. There are over 700 retail stores in the Township including several shopping centers and the Montgomery Mall which is comprised of 150 stores with three major department stores. The Township also encompasses four industrial parks. Most of the open space in the Township is devoted to recreational facilities, including many parks, natural areas, fitness trails, soccer fields, and neighborhood play areas. There are several major roadways throughout Montgomery Township including Route 309, Route 63, Route 463, Route 152, and the new Route 202 Parkway.

Accreditation

In 2004 the Montgomery Township Police Department became the eighteenth police department in Pennsylvania to be accredited under the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association Law Enforcement Accreditation Program. The Law Enforcement Accreditation Program was designed and developed by the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association to provide a strategy for the continued professionalization of law enforcement agencies within our commonwealth. The accreditation process involves the development and incorporation of best police practices and procedures in over three hundred identifiable benchmarks targeted to improve department performance. When the procedures are in place, a team of independent professionals conduct a detailed assessment of the department to verify that all applicable standards have been successfully implemented. The accreditation process concludes with the final approval by the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commissioners that the department is worthy of accreditation.

Since achieving our accreditation in 2004, the department has undergone reaccreditation in 2007, 2011, and again in 2014, maintaining standards held by few of the over 1,100 law enforcement agencies in the Commonwealth today.
