Patrol Division
Uniform Patrols
These are uniformed members of the Police Department that provide traditional police services to the community. Among their duties are responding to calls for assistance from the police, minor traffic accident investigation, traffic/crowd control and other related tasks.
Generally, when someone calls the Police Department, a member of the Uniform Patrol Division is the first department member a citizen will encounter.
The Patrol Division is recognized as the “backbone” of the Police Department!
Highway Safety Unit
This Unit provides support to the Uniform Patrol Division in addition to providing accident analysis and traffic flow analysis. The Highway Safety Unit makes recommendations for improving both traffic flow and traffic safety on roadways throughout the township.
The Highway Safety Unit is responsible for investigating all serious or fatal traffic accidents. In addition to accident investigation, members of this unit conduct Commercial Motor Vehicle Carrier inspections in conjunction with federal and state transportation agencies.
Members of the Highway Safety Unit augment and enhance the services provided by the Patrol Division.
Canine Unit
The Canine Unit provides support to both the Patrol and Detective Divisions. These teams are trained in the apprehension of suspects and searching for evidence, property, and missing persons.
The Canine teams are “cross-trained” in narcotics detection. They have become an invaluable tool in drug interdiction and drug-related arrests.
In addition to normal police duties, these teams provide live demonstrations and public appearances to various civic groups and other functions.
Bicycle Patrol Unit
The Bicycle Patrol Unit provides support service to the Patrol Division by patrolling areas not easily accessible by conventional patrol vehicles. This Unit provides police service at special events and various community programs.
The Bicycle Patrol Unit further provides bicycle safety programs in Township schools and organizations.
Members in this Unit work closely with the Community Policing Unit and other Department Divisions/Units on an “as-needed” basis.
Community Policing Unit
This Unit provides support to the Patrol and Detective Divisions as well as the community. It works closely with the residential, commercial and industrial communities. The Unit develops strategies that promote pro-active community problem solving and Crime Prevention.
Community Policing develops and oversees the various Neighborhood Watch programs within the township.
Additionally, this Unit is responsible for presenting the D.A.R.E. program to students in Montgomery Township schools. Members of the Patrol and Detective Divisions also assist in this program.
