Anyone wishing to establish a new business in Montgomery Township must contact the Business Tax Office to obtain the necessary forms and information and to make application for a business license prior to commencing business. If your business will be open less than 30 days, you must obtain a temporary retail permit from the Office of Code Enforcement.
A Business Privilege and Mercantile tax return estimating taxes due for the year must be filed within 60 days from the date of commencing a business. Payment of the tax is due at the time the estimate is made. A final return is to be made on or before March 15th of the year following the tax year. If the final return shows an overpayment, the overpayment will be applied to the estimated return in the same calendar year in which the final return is being filed.
Every producer wishing to conduct an amusement within the township must make application prior to conducting such amusement.
It is the responsibility of the business to obtain tax forms and information relating to Montgomery Township’s taxes. Every attempt will be made to send forms and information to the owner of a new business. However, failure to receive forms does not exclude the business for failure to file a return and make payment as required by ordinance.
In addition, every new business must set up their payroll system to deduct $10 from every person in their employ whether the employee is paid by salary, wages or commissions and whether or not part or all services are performed within Montgomery Township. The deduction is to be made within 30 days after the employee was hired and remitted to the Business Tax Office. If the employee indicates to you that this tax was previously deducted by another employer and provides you with proof of deduction, you are not to deduct the tax. Please keep a copy of these proof of deductions with your records for future verification.
In addition, all businesses must contact the Office of Code Enforcement prior to opening the business for permit and zoning information.
